2005 and 1974

Both photos taken in Burnham Park, Baguio City, (northern) Philippines, 20 or 21 years apart. The left one was taken last Thursday. I'm not sure if the second one was taken in 1973 or 1974.

That's my nephew Michael (4) riding on the same sort of trike that's in the photo on the right. That's Allan (now 33) --Michael's dad-- at the wheel, and I'm at the back. (Click on photos for more info.)

ADDITION: Tuesday, Apr 12

David went into research mode on the tricycles shown in the photos:

Ah... this helps explain the 3-seater:

Inspired by your Philippine photos, I went looking for a North American supplier of multipassenger tricycles:

Here's one from California:

A "tandem insert" is available for this colorful line:

Automotive parts?

I couldn't find a single 3-seater, as in Allan's picture of Michael. My theory is that the motive power of a single preschooler, while sufficient to transport three Filipino children, is just not enough for the physically larger North American tots. Especially in mountainous terrain, or over longer distances.

Predictably, the American emphasis in tricycle design has been less on utility and more on sheer performance. This streamlined model allows your toddler to reach speeds of over 80 m.p.h. (125 kph):

Flying South for Hot Wings Then East to Buzz Manhattan!

I'll have to make this short as we're off soon to go flying again. David's making a recording from the footage I shot over the last couple of days so we can erase those and reuse the tapes.

Yesterday we flew south to visit with some friends and their little girl. I also put in a request for hot wings, so we had a wing feast at a restaurant near their house. I think I ate the equivalent of a whole chicken...!

We then headed east towards New York, because we wanted to capture the VFR corridor flight over the Hudson River beside Manhattan at night this time (a friend told us he only flies that route at night), and capture it on video tape. (Last time we flew the VFR corridor, it was in the afternoon.) Later tonight we'll edit it, download it to computer, and post some stills. Flying over Manhattan at night is BEAUTIFUL, with the city lights burning bright and cars looking like toys crossing over the bridges. Ground Zero was a giant beacon, and the lights on the Empire State and Chrysler buildings were all ablaze, too.

I didn't bring out my digicam at all because it has such a small zoom, but the video camera has a 18x optical zoom, perfect for aerials.

More to follow, after more flying!

We also dusted off David's underused videocamera, and I took some footage of him doing some touch-and-gos and flying around Cherry Ridge. David has never seen motion pictures of himself flying, so this was a good opportunity to critique his own technique.

David wrote about Friday's flying in his Multiply journal (a bit of a scare on this trip):

Baby romas! Luscious and juicy!*

I love the way the vines look like boney fingers.

I'm a food lover, I'll admit it. David lost me in Wegman's last night -- I was off in a corner of the store, sniffing the goat cheese.

(I don't like to refrigerate produce, the chill kills the flavour. So, I photographed the fruit and veg late last night before it ripened too much. Also, the heat from the lights I use speed up the ripening process, so I have to do it right away.)

* For some like David and Socar, this also spells Heartburn City

I've been messing around in monochrome. There's no digital manipulation on the left photo, but the right photo has a 'water paper' filter. (Click photos for comments.)

Digital Hairdressing

A Photoshop experiment, which is cheaper -- and quicker -- than going to the salon. (Click on the photo for method used.) Not that I pay much for a haircut, anyway ($14), but at least I don't have to make an appointment for Photoshopping. I don't like getting my hair done and consequently avoid it until absolutely necessary. I have a good hairdresser in Vancouver, a Japanese lady who used to work at Suki's (cha-ching!) but now works from home since having kids. With my headful of thick, coarse hair it takes around an hour to finish a cut, and that's an hour I could've spent doing something more interesting.

Last month the dry ends were driving me bananas, so I took some scissors to it and had David trim the back. It's long enough that our amateurish swipes aren't too noticeable, but I'm going to need a proper cut soon. I've been cutting David's hair, which has been made easier with a pair of trimming shears I bought off Amazon.com. It took ages to find a decent pair that wasn't for horses or cost $200, but it was still relatively easier than trying to find it locally, which turned up diddly-squat.

Hugh and his fan mail

Yesterday I received Easter mail, thanks to slow holiday post. In it was some pre-school artwork from my nieces and nephew, who wrote some notes cleverly disguised as Easter greetings, but were essentially Hugh fan mail.

I put the artwork out on the front porch, where I was supervising Hugh as he went out to sniff some bushes. (He's de-clawed in the front, so I have to chaperone his outings.) I tried to get him to sit by the drawings, but have you ever tried to make a cat do anything? It's futile. There was a bit of a breeze, so the papers got shuffled. By the time I fetched some remote controls to weigh down the artwork, Hugh had found a new corner of the porch to investigate. I even gave him more food and used his bowl as a paperweight, but he saw right through this charade and went inside to mock me from the living room.

The photo of the artwork on the right has notes on every drawing in Macromedia Flash (click on the photos to view), but I've transcribed the notes for those who don't have Flash (David's mom uses WebTV, which can only translate HTML).

(Drawings, left to right)

Dear Auntie Gail,
This is a river. This is a red fish and a yellow fish. I made it for you. I love you.
Love, Maddy (3)

Auntie Gail and David,
Your cat is great and fat. This is your cat.
Michael (4)

Dear Auntie Gail,
I miss you. I love you. This Hugh your cat. The wind is blowing outside. Madeleine is playing. We have a new house. I want to invite you at our new house sometime and we can't forget Uncle David. We will invite him too. I think the view from up in the airplane is beautiful. Nice in fact.

Awwww *sniff*

Today my father, step-mother, brother, and nephew fly to the Philippines for two weeks to visit relatives and attend a family reunion. I was supposed to be with them, but extenuating circumstances have prevented me from making this trip. I'm disappointed, but hopefully I can go next year with David and stay for a month as I'd planned. Anyway, I hope Michael gets to see this picture of Hugh before they catch their plane. I made a video of Hugh, too, but it will take a while to edit down the three-minute long file (32MBs or so) to something manageable for download and viewing.

It's a Deluge!

driving rain
Uploaded by gailontheweb.

April showers bring May flowers... I bloody well hope so!!!

Thankfully we went flying on Friday night, because it rained all day Saturday and today. Maybe I asked for too much when I said I wanted rain to melt all the snow, because we had enough rain bestowed upon us yesterday to float Noah's ark.

It started when we left for Philadelphia early yesterday afternoon. By the time we were 10 miles into our trip, the windscreen wipers could barely keep up with the sheets of rain. We were hydroplaning all over the place; switching lanes was hazardous. There were waterfalls beside the highway that threatened to flood the embankments.

We were only in Philadelphia the other Saturday, but I'd been reminiscing about the great Philly cheese steaks we had two visits ago, and we wanted to see Woody Allen's latest film, "Melinda and Melinda". Needless to say, Woody Allen works aren't mainstream enough for these parts, and therefore completely unavailable. I searched for the closest movie theatres showing it, and they were either in the Philly area, New Jersey, or New York. We chose to head south instead of east, since we were in Manhattan the previous weekend.

David's review on Multiply: Melinda and Melinda

When we reached downtown Philadelphia the rain began to diminish, and stopped completely by the early evening. The air was fresh and warm when we walked from the cheese steak place to the cinema, so after the film I suggested we try and shoot some pictures of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge from the New Jersey side. It must've been a sign from above, because the heavens opened up again after we traversed the bridge...

Was Somebody trying to tell us NOT to go to New Jersey??? The photo above was taken crossing the bridge, as it started pelting. It took us a while to find the Camden waterfront, which was deserted save for a Leon's taxi driver and a police car. A sign pointed to a historical site -- Walt Whitman's house, only a short distance away from a giant sign for a bail bonds office housed in an old building. An interesting juxtaposition, but the rain made it impossible to capture it on camera. Next time!

Since it was pouring again, the only thing left to do was head back across the bridge to Pennsylvania. Instead of the 'name places running through the alphabet' car game, we spent the treacherous trip back to Scranton writing limericks about our Orkut friends. I'd post some of them here, but lacking context they wouldn't make sense.

twisted rim
Uploaded by gailontheweb.
About 10 miles from home, we hit some massive potholes the size of craters. It was dark, and we had no warning -- David went to the passing lane to try and avoid them, and we hit another one so hard I thought we'd killed whatever suspension was left after the first pothole. The car stayed in one piece, but it was rumbling. We passed by some other folk along the roadside who probably hit the same potholes, but sustained more damage. David was sure the tire was flat, but there was no place to pull over safely, so we just kept going. There was some cursing from the driver's side, as David had just replaced the front tires the previous day!

Amazingly, the tire wasn't punctured, but the rims were twisted, as you can see by the photo. What we didn't notice last night was how badly the rim was bent -- not just the part I photographed, but much of the way around. David's going to take the car in tomorrow to the dealership. His final car payment is this month, so I'm sorely tempted to quote Murphy's Law...

(Was it worth it all for some Woody Allen and Philly cheese steak? Oh yes!)

O Spring, Where Are Thou? Ahhh!!!!

I took these the other day, 45 minutes apart. It's even nicer today! Hope to go flying tomorrow!
